Charlotte, North Carolina is a long way from Hollywood, but in 1956 MGM decided to premiere a new sci-fi film there at the Southeastern Science Fiction Convention on March 3, 1956. That movie, Forbidden Planet, would amaze its small audience and go on to become one of the most important films of the genre ever made.
